Everything is metric on the bike. Good luck with it. Thank goodness for internet swap meets and auctions when it comes to restoring these old bikes.

I've heard VMX and Vintage Iron plastics are good. I bought a seat foam and cover from AMS Racing and was very pleased. I believe the shocks are rebuildable.

http://vmxracing.com/[/url] - Replica fenders and side panels. The OEM side panels were painted, don't bother with the replicas. http://www.mxm.co.uk/ - Replica seat cover. No it is not possible to repair OEM shocks and they are junk. Look for Fox air shox on eBay or buy Works Performance, Falcon etc. The length is 17.5". I'll sell you a complete air box, but it'll take a week or so to pull all the parts together. Take advantage of the weak US dollar...

Daniel,
I will put together a document for you in the next couple of weeks describing the rebuild procedure that I have used on numerous sets of stock shocks. One of the reasons that the stock shocks received bad reviews was because the nitrogen leaked out of them almost right out of the factory and there was no way to recharge them. You can buy 40mm x 12.5mm Race-Tech YZ80 shock bearing heads and use them are replacements for the originals. I have seen them around for about $45 each. Be sure that you have decent shock rods before making the investment. Compression and rebound damping are adjustable with shims, much like any present-day rebuildable unit. You can get your spare shims from other Showa shock cadavers including CR and XR dual shock models. This pretty much leaves the quality of the ride up to your patience with experimentation, and multiple test rides for evaluation.
Adding a Schrader valve for nitrogin charge is not difficult. Adding a remote reservior is fairly easy.
Removal of the end bearing cap without damaging it is the only slightly tricky part. I will show you how to part it from the shock using a metal lathe and a brass drift. If you don't have access to a metal lathe there other, not so delicate ways of removal. Don't start cutting on the shocks until you have relieved any residual nitrogen pressure by drilling a very small hole in the location where the
Schrader valve will be. I will provide you with approximate dimensions later.
The stock shocks are cool once you're comfortable working with them and they hold more oil than my Ohlins. That makes them even cooler.

Thank´s.

Elsinorestuff,
The original 78/79 Showas were emulshion shocks, oil and gas, no bladder, or internal floating piston. When you take an original seal out of the bearing head, you'll understand why the gas escaped, especially if stored with the shock rods up. The fit was too loose, maybe 'cause the seal shrank.
When you open the shock, and if you see a bunch of rubber chunks inside, it's a former rebound ring once located between the bearing head and the piston that became hardened and pulverized. It happened on some shocks, not on others, the rings remained soft. I just leave them out completely. The only way that these shocks will top-out is if you forgot to put the piston and/or the fluid in. I have been charging with 125 lbs. of nitrogen.
I sent you an email.
Bob

Moto recon:

Can I understand by what you explained that stock shocks will leak without use?
I have an almost no use 79 cr 250, and the shocks were leaking and the paint was scratch by the springs. By looking at the bike I could tell why the shocks look use and the bike doesn´t.

the bike is the march 2007 bike of the month ( esteban casarino ) take a look.

Hello!
The shocks were built under nitrogen gas pressure and I bough several 79 CR250rs new and most of the gas charge had already leaked out before leaving the showroom floor.
