 Post subject: Strange CR450 behavior
PostPosted: Sun Jan 25, 2004 8:44 pm
My 1981 CR 450 did some very strange things today. It was running great then all of a sudden it started to rev up and down, then just reved up wide open. I pushed the kill button, which works, but the bike kept running wide open. I then pulled the high tension lead from the spark plug, and the bike kept running for about 10 seconds. Very strange. I think it is carbon build up creating hotspots, and the bike was just self-igniting. Has anybody else ever had this problem. Thanks Jon

I assume you did the basics like check the throttle cable to make sure it isn't stuck...
Sounds like you are sucking air. Check the air boot between the carb and cycliner and also the stator side crank seal.
The reason it continued to run is the plug's ground strap or carbon was red hot and generated it's own spark.

I had a 73 CR250 do the same. It would die however once i hit the kill switch. my Problem was a crack in the case in the crank area. Just a thought?
