My '73 cr250m has a leaky shift shaft seal (say that fast) What's the best course of action to replace it? Do I have to split the case??

Nope, you don't have to split the cases. But it may be difficult to remove if it's been there since '73! A cotter pin puller works pretty well. They're stiff and the tapered tip is curved just right for most applications. Just try not to gouge the case and use some grease to slide in the new seal.
