Post subject: CR250 Tranny binding up
PostPosted: Sun Jan 25, 2004 9:06 pm
We have a 75 CR250M has run fine for a year since restoring it now when shifting up from 2nd gear output shaft will lock up. It feels like you are pressing the rear brake. We have split the cases twice replaced the two outer shift forks and its shaft. After the bike did the same thing we found the third shift fork again worn. We replaced the spring for the shift drum detent that holds it in gear. Again it wants to lock up when power is applied. Any Ideas?

Check to see that you have all the thrust washers you need on your main shaft & countershaft. Does the cases go back together easy? Are any of the bearings worn out? Do all the main shaft gears & countershaft gears mesh properly? Do you have shavings in the oil? If so are they steel or magnisium case shavings? Is the output shaft bent? Are the shift fork shafts bent? Thets about all i have for now. Hope it helps and good luck!

I think the cogs on the side of one gear is popping out of the slots in the other gear. This will cause the gears to "widen out" (lack of better words) when the seperate and bind the transmittion.
I had this happen on a Honda ATC 250 years ago. If this is the case you will have to replace both gears as both wear out together like a chain and sprockets.
