I recently bought another pretty decent 73 cr250m. It needs work, but The bike seemed pretty original and pretty unmolested. Noticed the frame number and the engine numbers did not match. Both are from the 73 series as they start with 1. Just got to thinking maybe in 73 Honda did not match frame and motor serial numbers. Any experts here have the answer? Ultimately I don't care as I'm using my bikes as vintage racers, but I would like to have correct information.

Nobody knows if their 73/74 frame and engine numbers match.

Well that's a start. Any other 1973/1974 cr250m owners care to chime in on the VIN topic

Late to the party but Hondas rarely match. Im the original owner of a 69 z50 mini trail,it's numbers are 5 thousand off! People on a mini trail forum have questioned it in the past but luckily the dealer recorded the numbers on the bill of sale. That said my MR 250 is one off. Maybe the reason is the more that were produced the greater the chances were they were not kept in order at the factory? Also that complete engines were kept in the parts flow for service where as complete frames minus engines were not. I know replacement frames in the system were not stamped and so too replacement engine cases, but I'd bet complete engines were for tracking, but am not sure.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking as well. I'm gonna go with the belief they do not match.
