Can anyone tell me what those 2 things circled in red are from my '74 Honda MT 250? I'm looking to remove the barrel from the lower end not sure if I need to remove them? There 4 in total.

Those are fin dampers; bullet-shaped rubber inserts with steel rods driven into them, which push them outward against the fins to reduce ringing noise. The MT125 and MR175 cylinders use similar ones.

You don't need to touch them at all if you don't want to. They were falling-out loose on one of my motors, so I took them all out (no noise increase at all), but otherwise I just leave them in.

Thanks Ray. I'm starting my first restoration on a '74 MT using a '75 as a parts bike. So to remove the barrel after removing the head bolts and head I just need to pry up the barrel?

Thinking you've done a few restorations yourself, any recommendations and advice you can share on the MT? I have bike #1 dismantled and the frame, swing arm and tank at the sand blaster now. I'm starting to work on the engine.

The cylinder is located on the cases by two short mild-steel tube dowels. which tend to rust hard to everything they touch (cylinder, stud, cases, etc.) I'd suggest plenty of heat and PB Blaster type penetrant around the dowels and old base gasket, and trying to rock the cylinder loose using rubber mallets left and right on the cylinder sides, rather than levering up on a cylinder base fin with a crowbar or big screwdriver (it will likely snap off). Hey, you might get lucky and it'll pop right off, but also be prepared for the worst too.

Ray, soaked the studs in penetrating oil, added some heat and I got the barrel off, thanks!

The engine is almost done, all the parts are here now time to rebuild.

The tank has been sand blasted, cleaned of rust and interior coated, now to paint.

The frame and swing arm is sand blasted will get primer on them next week.
