I have an issue with my MT250 that I am hoping to get some input on. I bought the bike last winter. It had a stuck engine that I finally freed after a couple months of pouring Mystery oil in the spark plug hole and pushing it in high gear around the shop. I cleaned the carb and replaced a broken needle jet. It would not start so I gave it a quick shot of starting fluid which got it going. After a few seconds the engine started racing and I finally had to shut it down. It has done this each time I have started it. The throttle slide does not appear to be stuck as I can hear it bottom out on the idle set screw when I close the throttle.

Any suggestions on what might be causing this?

Thanks,
Jim

I would do a visual on the carb slide as it may not be closing all of the way down. I know, you said it did but...get a visual on this.

Next up is, if not racing to the moon, I would spray carb cleaner around the intake and left side of the crank to see if there is a vacuum leak.
A 40 year old bike will have dry seals and the rubber intake is old enough to tear easily.
