Post subject:  '79 CR250 clutch issue

Just rebuilt a '79 CR 250. My problem is the clutch, specifically the clutch actuator arm and cable. Using a new cable and clutch plates, I cannot adjust the cable enough to get any more than a small amount of clutch disengagement. Both adjusters are all the way out and it's still not enough. It seems as if the cable is too long. The arm the cable attaches to moves thru most of its travel before it contacts the rod which pushes the pressure plate. So, I guess my question is what can I expect the correct amount of clutch actuator movement to be? If any of the above makes sense then any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I had this same problem with my 79 YZ250 and 400 I had bought an aftermarket cable and they where too long. my fix was to locate NOS Yamaha cables and problem was solved.

I'm thinking that is my problem too. I used a new Terry cable. Should have worked but am now looking for an OEM cable. Thanks.

Thanks. I discovered the bracket that the clutch cable attaches to was incorrect for the bike. Found the correct one on ebay. Hasen't yet arrived but I'm sure it will make a big difference. Also have a new actuator arm.

you should also change the needle bearing and the sealring.
theese are std. parts avaliable at a bearing shop.

I have a new seal. Bearing is a good idea too. Thanks!
