Post subject:  Help for 1979 cr125

Hello, I plan on vintage racing a 1979 Honda cr125 next year. I am looking for help concerning placing a 21' wheel on the front. Who does frame mods for this, and what type of upgraded rear shocks or mods for them. I read that someone has a cd concerning this bike but I can not get hold of them. Also clubs, suggestions on where to get parts... I am new to this type of media, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you gourleyville@yahoo.com

Here's a Google link to a bunch of '79 CR125 info here at VDB, in case you have little luck with the search function:

Once you've got a 21" wheel installed, I'd strongly suggest riding the bike several times w/modern tires before cutting up the frame, especially if using 30+ year old info - you may really like the way it handles as-is. Back in '79 a 27° or 28° fork angle (which is close to what you'll have with just the rim-size change) was considered ultra-steep, but nowadays 26° or even less is the norm and 28° will likely seem raked out and stable-feeling. If you don't like it, mod the frame.

Thank you for the tip, Ray. I will try the stock frame first. Right now I am trying to get parts to restore the bike, if anyone has a tip it would be appreciated. Thank you John

We changed from 23" to 21" and the bike actually handled better with the 21" and changed nothing else. Kind of felt like a chopper with the 23". Hold on to the 23" wheel and tire cause you may want to restore it back to stock once your done racing it or if you are looking to get rid of it they bring good money. What region are you in? I'm the coordinator for AHRMA South East region and if there is anything I can help you with just let me know. My contact info is on the website. www.ahrmase.org

We did the frame mod back in the day and it worked fine. I'm now again racing a 79 CR125 and using a 21" front wheel without the frame mod, handles a treat for me we needn't of bothered back in the tbh.
