I have a 1976 Honda MR175 Elsionore. I understand that these bikes were not exactly made (from the factory) to be street legal. But, as stubborn as I am...I want to turn the damn thing into a street legal bike.

What steps would I have to go through to attach a break switch, actuator, and a break light?

I am not exactly savvy with wiring...but I am more than willing to learn! You cannot find many videos on YouTube when it comes to the MR's, MT's, and sometimes even the CR's.

The easiest way is to add a front brake switch (from an MT/XL/whatever) to the existing OEM RH lever perch, which is already drilled for it; you'll also need a dual-filament taillight bulb & socket, wiring, etc. Compare the MR175 & MT125 wiring diagrams & you'll get a pretty good idea how to do it.

Ray,

Thank you for the advice! I wasn't sure if I was going to need to rig a small 6V battery onto the bike or not...but now that I know it can be hardwired, that gets rid of my stress. I have been looking at taillights that are compatable with the MT125, but they all have 2 wires (red/black or red/blue). Is that still able to be used as a brake light too? Or is it just a tail lamp like what comes on an MR175?

Chris,

Normally, a tail/brake light will have three wires: taillight-filament 6V, brake-light filament 6V, and ground for both. That's what my MR has (I didn't install it initially, but I rewired it completely when the taillight assembly was replaced).

This is the Acerbis Dual Sport light I use on both my 175's - it comes with instructions:

Ray,

Okay, I'll stay away from the 2-wire lamps. I believe I found the lamp you sent me. I think I have it linked below...

Do I need additional wiring to attach the brake switch? Or can it be wired to the original wiring harness on the MR175? And if I need additional wiring, what power source should I attatch the wire to?

Sorry for all of the questions...lol

Chris,

Yes, that's the one. I mounted mine with two screws into the fender plastic and a bolt through it, it's been fine for years of pounding.

This switch should snap right into the hole in the MR175 front brake lever perch, next to the cable adjuster:

I'd splice the black switch wire into the yellow wire from the ignition-stator lighting coil, then run the green/yellow switch wire to the brake-light filament (you could also reverse the switch wires w/no problem).

Ray,

I just ordered that taillight. I'll be giving this thing a whirl when the parts come in this weekend. I jumped the gun before you responded and ordered a brake switch that will fit the MT125. Thankfully, it's the same one you sent me, just a different seller. I have it linked below.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/272332113095?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

I'll be sure to follow the steps to wiring it up. I have both diagrams from the manuals I downloaded from Honda-Elsinore.com and it makes more sense to me now. At the moment, it's all about waiting for the parts to come in. :?

Thank you for your help, Ray! Seriously, I would've been stuck at square one for a long time if it weren't for your response!

No problem, Chris - hopefully yours will work as well as mine did. My lights are now disconnected from the stator as I'm running a CR125M ignition, but they could still be powered up with a battery, especially if I went the LED route.

That switch should be fine. The 12V bulb in the Acerbis will be dimmer than the normal 6V, but should last longer at high rpm and in the dirt. The 6V bulbs I used back in the day never lasted very long, kind of defeating the purpose of having a street-legal light setup.
