Picked up this 1980 CR 125 yesterday on dallas craigslist. Needs a new crankshaft. Question, will a 1981 work? Also it has this aluminum swingarm, possibly different shock springs. It could be a great restoration candidate. Its mostly all there. I won't tell you what I gave, but lets just say I got a great deal. Its a barn find. Any help would be greatly appreciated

You should just have the crankshaft rebuilt.

The rods are not the same for 80-81 125's. Hot Rods makes a rod kit for 81-84 models but that doesn't help you any. You will need to search for a rod kit for a 1980. As far as I know the 79's were different since Honda had a new motor in 79 and 1980. Any decent bike shop can press a new rod onto your crank and true it up. I do them for $40.

Pretty sure on that crank you need to bore the crank cheeks to accept a larger diameter pin so you can find a rod kit . If you still need help let me know and I will do some more research . We have done a few bikes where you just cant get rod kits and the bigger bottom pin is the answer . We have fixtures already made if that's the route you need to go and we are super reasonable on price .

Like John said you can use the rod from an 81-84 CR (I believe it is the same one as the Suzuki RM). You just need to rebore the holes for the pin at the crankshaft to a larger size. I have done it to several 1980 cranks. Crank works in Arizona does a great job.
