Post subject:  What 2005 bike would you buy?

Once I get the mess in my garage squared away (forks, shocks and motors everywhere) I think I may sell my 1988 and one other bike and buy a 2005 MXer. Of course the 2005 CRF450 seems to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I'm a 2 stroke guy at heart. Since the new CRs suck I guess I may have to look to one of those "other brands".

If you could walk into any shop and buy any 2005, which one would it be?

Sounds like treason to me, but if you must by a 2005 2-stroke get a YZ250.

Treason? At least I don't own a Dual Sport. LOL

Thanks for the input Michael! From all the tests I've read it seems like the YZ250 and the RM250 are the last hope for the once mighty 2-stroke.

How about a 2005 YZ250 with an R.P.M. Big Bore kit? :D

Good question Robbie. As for the 2005 CR's nobody knows yet because they are not available to test. Honda has obviously decided to put the resources behind 4-strokes and I think it is great that they make the best thumpers available.

The previews of the new CR's don't show that Honda has put enough into the 2005 CR125 and CR250 to catch up. They were the 4th or 5th best 2-strokes last year and even further down when you throw in the 4-strokes. So why would I want to spend that much money to have the 7th or 8th best bike on the track. My lack of talent already puts me at a disadvantge. :(

If I decide to join the 4-stroke band-wagon (steam roller?) I would run, not walk, to my nearest Honda dealer and buy the best MX bike in the world (CRF450).

I guess a quicker answer would have been H-O-R-S-E-P-O-W-E-R. :shock:

No apologies for the "dual sport" or a modern(ish) bike. My neighbor wanted to go racing and this is what I got in trade for a 1980 and 1981 YZ250H..plus some money changed hands. For grins I am going to ride it to work occassionally (it's legal) and ride it down in Mexico. I also may take it for a spin in the Modern Support class at the local vintage races. And between you and me if Santa leaves eight grand in my Christmas stocking I'll be down the Honda dealer Boxing Day Morning for a CRF450R :lol:

They want to attack the two strokes for emissions. Then when they ban those they will go after the 4 strokes for sound. After they get those two banned I guess they can go after Mountain Bikes.

I own four 2 strokes as well as a bunch of 4 strokes. IIRC new production two strokes are already banned in California, my home state, from public land.

If I were to invest in a new bike given the environmentalist nuts we have in the state it would probably tip me towards a 4 stroke. I'm getting kind of old, fat, and slow too so I would even consider electric start! :D

i guess all of you would consider my new bike treason. i bought a brand new imitation honda clone made in china of all places.

its a exact copy of a honda xlr 125 enduro. the xlr is only available in europe and south america as far as i know.

Hey BP,

As long as you are having fun riding it who cares. So many stars from the past and a lot of people from these forums started out riding Hodakas and other clones. Quality and parts supply could be a problem though. I hope you get your Yen's worth out of it. :)

i was reading somthing that said that honda has redone the motor for the new 2005 cr125

Robbie,

I hope they have done something great with the CR125 motor, but the other makes inproved their 125's from last year and the CR125 was the least powerful in 2004. It was the best handling bike with the least power last year ( A KTM like motor would make it the best 125 ever.) We can always hope.

It's a shame to see the CR125/250's become also rans when they used to dominate for so long. :(
