I picked up a 1974 DT250 for $50 that the guy took the head off and it sit outside. Anyway the crank is not rusted up and am thinking about making this bike my first complete motor rebuild. It was missing some parts (carb, airbox, muffler, most of the lights) but most of the parts are there. Someone painted the gas tank, fenders, oil tank a ugly red and the tank has got alot of rust in it.

What I need to know is am thinking about making it a bike to ride with no lights and it will not be a street bike again. What do I need to do to not use the oil pump and use per-mix from now on. Also has anyone replaced the seals and crank bearings in this bike and where did you get the parts, are they hard to get. With the motor apart what else would you replace. Thanks!

ebay, and speed and sport,nw vintage cycles for parts sources.you will have to remove the the primary cover to remove the oil pump and make a block off plate for the pump.i think you can replace the crank seals without splitting the cases unlike the 250 honda elsinores.i highly suggest getting a manual for this machine, they can be readily found on ebay.some 73-74 mx 250 parts will interchange.should be a neat project.

thanks Dave for the info, I just got the manaul from eBay for the bike. I have also bidded on some extra parts that I really don't need, it was a good price. Anyway I just bidded and won the auction on a set of 1974 MX250 foot pegs, am hoping they will fit the DT. If not I will resell them. That block off for the oil pump, was it made from metal and how was it attached. Thanks again

the block plate could be made out of some steel plate or some aluminum plate.it does not have to be very thick, about 2 or 3 mm thick or so.just take the measurements of the oil pump mounting and fabricate the plate.
