Post subject:  1978 TT500
Hi all. I'm new here and need a little help. Just purchased this and with a little TLC got her looking and runing good. Real strong bike and a lot of fun. Here's my problem, I have an oil leak at the shift shaft. I purchased a new seal and was woundering if this can be changed from the outside or does the case need to be cracked open? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

here is a parts blowup on your bike,it looks like it can be replaced without splitting the cases.

about any Yamaha i have the seal can be replaced in a manner of minutes,just remove the foot lever then the little guard piece then pop out the seal and replace it with a new one.

Out of curiosity do you live around the Saint Louis area? I looked at a 1978 TT500 recently that also had a leaking shifter shaft seal.

No I don't live in the St Louis area but I understand this leak is a common problem but an easy fix. Finally got around to taking care of it today. A 3$ seal and 1/2 hr of time, problem fixed. While test riding the bike to test the seal I found the gear box doesn't want to shift through the gears. Neutral to first and back are fine but that's it??? Any thoughts? The bike has set around for 3-4 months. Don't know what to think.

How does the cluch adjustment screw on the left side of the case work? What I am asking is what does it do when I turn the screw to the right and then what does it do when you turn it to the left?

Another question. The bike shifts back and forth from neutral to first and back to neutral without any problem, but it will not change in to second gear and up??? Any thoughts about where to start?

Is the gear shift lever 'floppy' ? Sounds like it could be a tired/broken return spring.

The shifter seems very solid without any unwanted movement. I have tried to shift it through the gears but I only have one up and one down. I hate the thought of tearing the bike all apart if I don't have to. Thanks for all the help so far.

The shifter mech is visible behind the clutch. If that looks to be operating correctly then you may need to strip the engine to inspect selector drum and forks but I would imagine it's more to do with the selector quadrant not operating correctly.

I think I may have figured out my problem with the shifter. When I changed the shifter shaft seal I had a hard time replacing the retainer clip. I had the bike tipped over on the right side to make it easier to see and so the oil wouldn't run out. The shaft had slipped back into the transmission. I tried to pull it out but it wouldn't budge until I turned it a small amount and the gears lined up and it came out enough to reinstall the retainer clip. What I thing has happned is the gears are missaligned by a tooth or two. I am going to try to realign them by pushing the shaft in and turning it the other way and see if that works. I'll keep you informed with my process.
