Post subject:  Rear wheel bearing removal
So I am trying to replace the rear wheel bearing but I cant.
I took them to the press and but all the force I could on it and it did not even move on going both ways.
I got them to go further with waking it with a hammer before I removed the hub fully. Now I got the hub out and pressed it would not move. Turned it around and the bearings went back it to it original spot. Then after flipping back and forth never again.
Looking at the parts books its 2 bearing, spacer, 2 bearing and a oil seal I don't see anything that could be stopping them. Visual inspection nothing either.
I am using a 12 ton press but it is not moving them.
Anyone run in to this problem?

Well there goes that the press snapped the hub.

wish i could had got here quicker. :shock:

you remove 1 wheel bearing at a time using a hammer and a drift,there is usually a hole in the spacer and you find a drift that more or less fits in that hole.tap the drift with a hammer and work the hole around then tap it,avoid cocking it in the bore then the wheel bearing on one side and the spacer should come out.

flip the rim the opposite way and drive out the other in a conventional manner.

install one bearing with the sealed end facing outwards then reinstall the spacer and other bearing with the sealed end out or install the seal that comes with the kit.

it is a pretty easy job.

Well the rear has 4 bearing 2 on each side (one side also has a seal). The old hub I hammered the shit out of it in every different spot I could try and nothing. I think the person before my used bearing and shaft loctite or something.
The next hub I got from ebay it was worn the bearing just fell out. So when I put the new ones in I used some loctite and they seem to be in there now. Was going to make a sleeve but I did not have the materiel. Next was shim stock for rod and main bearings but yep ran out of that.

The front wheel bearing I was able to get them out by hitting them with a hammer and chisels but I had to move the spacer and hit it on the spacer.

The problem I noticed is in he hub there is the spacer and its flush with the out race so you have to hit the spacer. Then inside the hub there is also a step witch stops the bearing from all being pressed out.

i am really sorry about your loss.sadly it is time to look for either a replacement hub then take it to a shop for installation or hunt for a good used rim with a good hub in it.

if i were you i would not ride the bike until that cracked hub is addressed.

Yea already got a hub. Already replaced the bearing, repainted, and laced. The rims could use some truing but it can wait, this thing just got restored (mostly) after 25 years of not doing anything. Just give it few rides then do it when the weather is crapy.
The rim did not crack it broke one one side in to 3 parts.
