I recently acquired a 1975 Yamaha DT250 that I plan to restore to running condition. The engine seems to be complete, but I need a bunch of body parts, like gas tank, forks, seat and fenders, and some electrical parts, like CDI and coil. Parts for these old bikes can be hard to find. It would help if I knew other Yamaha models from the same year or vintage that would interchange with the parts from my bike. I can often find parts from other Yamaha 250s, but I don't want to spend a lot of money on stuff that won't fit. When I restored my '74 Suzuki TS250 this spring, I discovered than many parts from the TM250 would transfer. I was wondering if anyone know if the same is true for the DT250 and the YZ250 or another old Yamaha model. Any helpful hints? Thanks for your help.

It's hard to say, because sometime in those years the YZ got a plastic tank, whereas the DT kept the steel. As far as the ignition stuff goes, check the parts catalog on the Yamaha's website. Fenders and stuff would probably fit, but may not be an exact match. Look at parts for '74 and '76 DTs as well - both the 250 and the 360. We had an old '74 360, and the tank looks identical to the '74 250 that a buddy has, albeit a different color.

72 - 75 DTs share many parts. Almost all of the body parts are interchangeable, but they are not the same. Tank caps are a different style, etc. If it is not for a concours restoration then that may be perfect.

Also, 250 & 360 bikes share many parts, even in the engines. They are based on the same frame. The same is true with the 125 and the 175.

And finally, many of the parts on the MX bikes for the same years will fit on the DT bikes. This is NOT true of the YZs. As before, they will work but will not be concours correct. The MX and DT are built off of a shared platform. Some people put DT motors in MX bikes to take advantage of the MX's light weight and the DT's broad torquey powerband. It makes for an enjoyable trail bike.

Thanks, Nova. Very helpful hints. I have since discovered through the VIN that my Yamaha is not a '75. It is a DT1 and the serial maks it a '69. Makes parts a bit more scarce. By the way, nice list of toys. The signature line was too short so I couldn't list my '72 GT380...l
