I have a 1978 Suzuki PE 250 that I have had since 1995 or so. I sat the bike back in my dirt floor garage back in 2006 and recently found new love for it. I have cleaned everything up (exaust, aircleaner, carb) and got it started a few days ago. I drained the gas out of the tank and flushed the carb with some carb cleaner. It's not running as smooth as it used to, the air\fuel mix seems to be off. Does anyone know of a simple way of adjusting the carb for a base line run. I have attempted to adjust the mix screw and the idle adjustment screw while making runs in between to check the changes. It starts great on the first or second kick, the problem is there seems to be no midrange at all. It jumps from a good idle to a screaming beast instantly at about quarter throttle. I am ordering new plugs, one cold, one hot to see what that does. I am new to the vintage mechanic scene so any advice would be appreciated. It should be noted also that the bike was running very well before the storage period.

Sounds like your needle clip position is too lean and possibly the main jet may be lean. Try lowering the needle clip and see if it improves. Also try a size or 2 bigger on the main and see how that does. In the service manual it should give you stock setting for the jets, needle, needle clip position, float height, and air mixture screw (usually 1-1.5 turns out). Those specs would be the perfect baseline and then you can fine tune from there.
