Almost done with this bike and I ran into a snag, I tried to start it for the first time today and when you kick it it act like the clutch is pulled in and then it will catch but not enough to crank it over ever time you get it to catch it kicks over but at the bottom of the strock still not enough to crank it over. I checked timing, if you pull the spark plug it kicks over fine and has a good blue spar, problem is when you put the plug back in, I even pulled the head to make sure the piston was in correctly it was. Do I have a problem in the kick starter? Or is it some were else? Any suggestion.

Thanks

Sounds like an indexing problem with the K.S. gear/ratchet assembly. The RM 400 was a "primary kick start" bike, so, a slipping clutch would not affect the k.s. lever from starting the bike.

Thanks I will look at that as I have checked every thing and it points to the kick starter. Just did not want to have to split the cases again. Will let you know as it is now moved to th eback burner, cold winter day.

Hey Bob - I suspect you may have figured it out by now, but I just ran into a similar issue on my 370. As this is a "primary kick start" design (i think that is the correct term?), kick start dont work when clutch is pulled in.

On my bike, the round rod that is in the side case (clutch arm and cable hooks to the outside end of it), was sticking or not indexed properly etc, such when the cover was on, the clutch was partially disengaged - (I vefified cable tension was not the issue). I pulled the cover off, tried to kick it over, worked perfectly! I cleaned up the rod etc. made sure all was lined up properly, buttoned it all back up, no issues after that!
