Post subject:  TNT250 Shifting issues

Hi, I recently bought a 1975 Can-Am TNT250, basically a barn find as it had been sitting for 15+ years. I got it running but I'm having issues with shifting. Basically, the gear shifter will move up and down but it won't firmly click the way it's supposed to and it will rarely shift into gear or into neutral. To get it to shift I have to rock it back and forth a bunch and keep trying to shift it. The clutch doesn't change anything and obviously I can't ride it like this. Does anyone know what the issue could be or what part could be broken? Thanks!

My guess is it has a bent shift fork between the cases or maybe (hopefully) the part that moves the shift drum outside of the main cases. This one is on the opposite end of the shift shaft; at least on my Honda's.

Is the shift shaft straight or did a thrown chain bend it?

It has been 40 years since I last owned a Can-Am so memory is weak on this.

You have a nice find. If it is beyond your level of repairs I may be interested in a purchase.
