My guess is it has a bent shift fork between the cases or maybe (hopefully) the part that moves the shift drum outside of the main cases. This one is on the opposite end of the shift shaft; at least on my Honda's. Is the shift shaft straight or did a thrown chain bend it? It has been 40 years since I last owned a Can-Am so memory is weak on this. You have a nice find. If it is beyond your level of repairs I may be interested in a purchase.
