Hello. I am new here and a while back I bought basically two MT250's to turn into one urban assault vehicle. I have one titled frame but unfortunately most of the parts from the NON titled frame were the better ones. I have the motor out and have just finished rebuilding the carb. I am finally at the stage where I am ready to finagle this hot mess back together and am looking for some advice.

1. If I am not too sure if either oil pump works should I just remove it altogether and mix my gas? I am fine with a future of carrying two cycle oil with me, especially if it means less moving parts. Is the best way to bypass the oil pump to just leave it out all together?

2. What are some good starting settings for all of the carb jets that I have removed? How do I know how far in or out to screw the jets? I had two carbs and on both I had to replace the #200 air jet because I couldn't get them out without mangling them!

3. I have no key for the ignition. Should I just get rid of this as well? What is the easiest way to bypass this? I think I have a grasp on how to best do it but I don't want to fry anything! I am guessing that I just eliminate the ignition and run the wiring that enters and exits the ignition switch to the kill switch on the handlebar. Is this the best way to do this, or am I mental?

Thanks in advance for the help.
Marc

Marc,

Im not sure on the jets, but you can test your pump but using a drill and seeing if it shifts any oil when youve primed it etc. the tube from the pump to the cylinder is clear so you should see it working etc.

Keys are available so you can keep your ignition.... get the number off the front of the barrel, probably TXXXX where X's are numbers. The check ebay or google the number and chances are you will find some NOS keys for cheap :D

In the meantime, lets have some pics of you project...

The internal Jets themselves should be threaded in & tightened just past snug. Are you thinking of the adjustment screws on the outside of the carb?

I've disconnected the lines to & from the oil injector & have abandoned the injector in place. So far no problems. Eventually I would like to remove it completely. I don't know if that will affect the tachometer drive or not. I'm guessing that some form of block off plate will need to be fabbed up to replace the pump.

I used a small piece of alluminum bar from the local hardware store to block off the oil pump hole. I put a piece of cork gasket behind it to seal it and no it does not affect the tach, it will still work.

Thanks for all of the tips!
I will try to post some pics tonight.
I think I will most likely just leave the oil pump disconnected but still in place.

This thing is not going to be a looker at all. I am trying to keep my total expenditures under 500$ since I am considering riding this for the 555 ride (http://motonw.com). It would be a little underpowered though. I am also trying to track down some keys.

Thanks Again.

My MT doesn't really like freeway flying much at all. It's pretty much a 60-65 mph machine.

Do yourself a favor & buy a cylinder head temperature gauge. http://trailtech.net/tto_temperature.html The CHT on my bike will climb to the too hot range on the freeway.

Good luck on your ride.
