Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

I'm trying to locate a replacement choke for the factory Keihin carburetor on a 78 cr250 and I'm not having much luck, I believe the part number is 16046-430-020.

Is there another choke that will fit this? Or is this part available anywhere ?

I'm also considering just installing a new flat slide carburetor for this, and I am looking for some advise. Would you go with a Keihin or Mikuni? and what model number carbs are a direct fit for a 78 cr250?

Who has done this, and what was your experience with this mod ?

We run flat slides on all our Rockets. We use later 1986 on-wards CR 250 carbs. We keep the stock jetting to stat with.

They are pretty much a "bolt on" mod. We do a tiny bit of machining on the inlet stub so they fit into the inlet manifold a little better, some guys I know don't bother. But I think it helps to get a proper seal. We then use a 90* throttle assy, and a 97 Cr 250 cable.

Parts are easy to ge tfor the PJ, unlike the PE carbs. The PJ works really well, inproves throttle response and gives a little bit extra on the top end.

Thank you for the reply and the update. I'm not sure what you are referring to with the (90 * throttle assy), how is this different from the stock throttle assembly?

I mean a modern style throttle assy. With a std Rocket set up the cable is stupidly long and runs out though the front number plate. (it can snag on other riders, spectators, small children, track markers, marshalls... etc....) On my own race-bike I use an OEM Honda one (slightly OCD with keeping it "Honda"), but we also use Domino ones on all our other builds. (hopefully the pic has attached)
