Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

Any such thing as a quiet exhaust for the 1974 CR250M Elsinore? Here in CA we need to be under 96db’s to ride OHV area’s..I changed the packing in the silencer, still way too loud! Any idea's?

Not my Elsinore but I have added 3 different types of mufflers to my other bikes. Only 'famous' one was an old style Supertrap for ~$100. Yhe others were just ones I had laying around from left over projects.

The Supertrap is somewhat annoying in that it just uses a stack of steel plates to difuse the exhaust. Problem is you get a circular spray of oil that gets on shocks, fenders, seat.

I've seen these in a local dirt bike magazine.

I experimented with the Supertrap in the late '70s, early '80's. On my bikes there was a lot of power loss due to flow restriction that was compounded by the extreme buildup of exhaust carbon and un-burnt oil.
I think that the Supertrap is better suited to a four stroke.

I agree with Moto-recon, this was the case with my CR when I bought it. It had a 3" super trapp and was all gooked up and very restrictive.

Super Trapp made a specific 2 stroke silencer in the mid-70's that looked like the Elsinore pickle silencer but was larger and flat sided. It used a wavy core and no discs at the end.

The silencers that used discs were never intended for 2 strokes. Those are 4 stroke silencers. They were designed to produce backpressure which you don't need at the end of a 2 stroke pipe.

Seems like some vintage exhaust manufacture would develop a quiet exhaust system for these vintage bikes. I know we’re losing public area’s here in California due to noise issues. No more vintage races on public riding areas here, only private tracks. My 83 Husky 500CR was air cooled, and was much quieter than this Elsinore! Oh well I keep on bench racing till I move to Idaho in a few years.
