Looking for some feedback on mounting my Ohlin Piggyback on my 79 CR250.

It seems that the larger shock heads will not fit into the upper frame mounts unless I remove the shock mount cap that the bolt goes through

Has anyone removed the upper shock supports to allow for a larger shock head?

Will removing the outer portion of the shock mount increase bolt fatigue and shearing under load?

Red, I had to remove some material from the upper mounts on my 1980 model. Give me a day or two, I'll take a picture or two and post them.
I may have to fiqure out how to post them, but I'll post them.

Nice bike Dale and thanks for the pics.

My posts are cut same as your but still the shocks will not clear the top of the cap on my bike.

I almost hate to grind some of the Ohlins shock to make fit.

I will play with more tonight and look for another option.

Red4life, Understand you dilema, if those were my Ohlins I wouldn't wanna grind them either, it was pretty easy for me to grind my Progressives and they did have to be ground to fit, called Rick at Vintage Iron and he said "grind 'em".
Just the word "grind" makes me cringe. Good luck, I'd sure like to know what you figure out, for future reference, if by chance I was to ever come across a nice set of used Ohlins.

I can't bring myself to grind the shocks so I may talk to the Ohlins folks to see if I can order a new set made to fit the 79 cr.

These used Ohlins are to good to grind and I may use on my 80 RM125.

Red4life, have you tried http://www.huskyclub.com?
They may be able to modify your shocks, if you don't want to grind on the frame.
Michael has a good point, frames are pretty cheap in comparison to Ohlins shocks.

Hi,
Speaking from personal experience, one doesn't want to whittle too much on the reservoir as there's a fluid feed hole in the area that you'll be working. Locations of holes in machined castings aren't always precise. I have struck oil before! Really, a neat job of filing a radius at the frame's shock mount, to match and clear the shock casting, looks pretty trick. I have mounted Ohlins with the reserviors pointing either direction on the frame. Forward positioning requires more material removal, but can still look very good with a patient hand working a round file.

Ground the frame and shocks fit fine.

You are right Gary it was a bit of a challenge at first as to grind a powder coated frame or remove some of the shock body.

Gentle grinding and some paint on the bare metal and all is back to show condition.
