Why are Race Tech and Eibach fork spring free lengths different than stock? How could a shorter spring work without making adjustments elsewhere inside the forks?

For example:

'81 CR450
Stock = 609mm
Race Tech = 444mm

'81 CR480
Stock = 525mm
Race Tech = 472mm

'81 CR450
Stock = 581mm
Race Tech = 472mm
Eibach = 510mm

I appreciate if someone can provide some insight. :D

Thanks in advance.

Some Race Tech springs may be shorter to allow for the presence of their extra Emulator valve...

Oops! I had the years wrong. They should have been '81, '82, '83.

Michael - Thanks for your response.

That might be part of it, though the differences vary greatly and seem to be larger than what the valves can account for. It still doesn't make sense for the Eibach.

What if I were to fabricate and install a spacer to make up the difference?

Eibach says to make a delrin spacer to make up the difference. Is this common?
