Well it looks like I had cooked clutch plates and the MSR Raptor clutch lever simply was not generating enough pull at the actuating arm. I also found my clutch center nut was loose but I think that was just serendipity. I now have the cable on the middle position at the lever and eye-balling the basket with the cover off it looks like everything is back to normal.

You mean that lock tab washer came loose allowing the nut to turn??
I could see how that could mess up your clutch action!!
I always get paranoid reusing those things, but I do.
