Post subject:  Gas Tank Full of Pain
Hi everyone,
In the process of restoring my '74 MT250 I had to pull out a couple of fair sized dents from the gas tank. I got the advice here to tack on a welding rod and yank them out. That sounds like the best plan. I asked a friend to tack on the rods for me. He said, "Why dont we put some compressed air in it and pop them out?" I told him I didnt like the idea and I would rather stick to the welding rod plan. I had to leave the tank with him over night for him to do it. The next morning he decided to put air in the tank anyway......

I now have a 1974 Honda MT250 balloon :( The tank is deformed. The U shaped profile of the tank opened out, flairing both sides. It also caused stress to the seams creating several pin-holes :( <sigh>

Anyone out there have a mercy-tank for me? I have had a look on ebay, buy the only seller will not ship to Canada. I dont mind doing some work on a rough tank (short of blowing it up like a balloon).

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If i was you, that buddy of your's would be buying that tank for at least $500 big ones. I mean what a friend! find out how much VintageIron would re-store the tank for and have that buddy foot the bill!!

I may have a 'sorta' extra tank. It's not in great shape, some rust, dents, and no cap, wrong year for you/paint scheme. I had planned on using it on something other then an MT *BUT* if you don't find anything better on eBay in the next couple of weeks, email me and I will get it to you.

Sorry abot your tank, but next time try a PDR (paintless dent repair)man
on small dents. They now have small rods that glue to the dent, then are pulled out with a puller. Works really well in the hands of a good PDR man.

Check your yellow pages for paintless dent repair under body shops. Thay fix door dings and hail damage without painting. I used to do it myself. Its really cool!
