Post subject:  MT250 Tach and Speedo Inoperable

Hello. Finally got my '74 MT250 project running over the weekend. Neither the speedo nor the tachometer are working, however the odometer does work. Any suggestions on what to look at first to get these guages going again?

eBay

MT gauges usually show up about once a month and sell pretty cheap, maybe $10-$20 per.

So are you suggesting that I just trash can the old ones for other old ones out there? Isn't there any way that they can be restored to operation?

I'm sorry I can't remember the web site off hand but if you google you may be able to find it.

All I remember is some guy cuts off the compressed metal band that holds the gauges together to get to the internals and had some way of sealing them up after working on them.

Only thing I know is commonly available is artwork to replace the face. Someone has scanned the 250XL/350Xl images<which should be the same> and touched them up. You have to print them out and apply them. The guy who did it is on an XL board different from the one that had the detailed instructions. You can always ask there if they can give you a blow by blow description.

Are you sure it's the tach and not the cable? Also the tach cable turns off a plastic gear in the clutch side of the case. If the cable were rusted solid it's possible the gear could strip. My speedometer is original. Just turned 12,000 last weekend

It's not the cables....tach cable spinning with engine....odometer works....
