I will be changing the fork seals on CR250M any advice or know issues?? Must you take out the bolt (allen head) on the bottom to take the forks apart?? Do you need to take them apart to change the seals? thanks |

The basic procedure is to loosen the fork cap while the fork tube is held by the triple clamp. Remove cap and fork spring. Pour oil out top or drain via screw at base of fork leg. Pump the fork tube up and down in the slider to get the last of the oil out. Use an impact wrench to loosen the allen bolt at the base, or stick a broom handle down the fork tube to get some traction on the damping rod. (Some people make a specific tool to hold the damping rod. I have done this by grinding a 1/2" socket to fit and putting it on the end of the longest extension I could find.) Pull the fork tube (with damping rod) out of the slider. Remove any clips holding the dust seal and/or fork seal in the slider. Pry out the old seal(s). Caution: Make sure you have all the new seals, spacers and clips you need before you bugger up any of the existing parts and make sure whatever you use to get the seals out does not damage the slider. While you have the forks apart you might want to use some wet and dry paper to buff them up to a nice shine.... |

I just did this a couple of weeks ago. Really easy, once you get a 6mm allen wrench for impact wrench to get the bottom bolt out. Be sure and clean your wipers really good or buy new ones before reassembling, as any dirt inside will quickly destroy new seals. You don't need a seal driver or any other special tool. I put a set of seal savers over my wipers to help keep dirt out because my wipers were not in great shape. I think you can still buy new wipers through Honda. |
