Post subject:  Floppy Kickstarter Question

Does anyone know how to fix for the infamous floppy kickstarter on the elsinores? I have a 1976 MR175 with this problem, and i just bungeed the kickstarter against the frame and push start it, but i would like to fix it correctly. Is it a simple thing of replacing the kickstarter pivot bolt, or do i need to replace the whole thing?

Thanks in advance

If it is just a loose kickstarter arm on the shaft, might try new bolt. But if the shaft swings, too, the problem will be inside the case. Make sure the spring is on correctly and the pawls are in good shape. I put mine in wrong once and knew it immediately.

Depends on what you mean floppy......kick starter don't work at all, internal problem, spring has jumped off inside or maybe worse problems.
Just flops around but still works(starts engine) and don't stay put is what I'm thinking you mean.
Mine was because the bolt hole that the kick starter pivots on was wallowed out, fixed that problem by making a brass sleeve insert, got some brass tubing fromt the hardware store that the bolt would fit into snuggly and then pressed that into the kickstarter, cleaned the spring and ball and works fine(for now)

The usual problem is the detent mechanism.
There is a spring, ball and a concave indentation/hole. The hole gets worn and the ball just doesn't hold the kicker in place anymore. You can see how the hole is elliptical or the walls are rounded.
The fix is to weld the edge of the hole and re-shape it with a grinder.
Then make sure the ball and spring are in place and providing good tension. The ball can get a flat spot worn in it.
New ball, pull the spring a little and re-shape the hole and your kicker will be good as new!
Go4Ducks2 has a good idea of there's a problem with the bolt!
