Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

I currently have a 1976 MR175 that is burning a little transmission oil. It is not enough the foul the plug, but it does burn the oil. I am currently running Type F Automatic Transmission Fluid (not dexron or mercon) in the crankcase and it seems to help a little. I would like to rebuild the motor and put in new seals and bearings, and i was wondering if i could go to a NAPA and buy the seals and bearings, or should I buy from the honda dealer?

When you get it all apart, the bearings will have numbers on them that can be cross referenced.Look in the phone book for a bearing supply house, they can also supply seals.Then check the Honda dealer prices here-http://www.mrcycles.com/fiche_section_detail.asp

oops! I will try and get ya a link to the guy that I got my lower end bearings and seals for my MR250, he said they had kits for all of the Elsies...

Take the bearings and seals to a bearing supply house and they will match with a modern set that are better quality and at a fraction of the price of buying OEM.

I went to Allied Bearings, here in Tulsa, when I rebuilt mine and I paid $68 for the two main bearings. I thought then, and still do, that was a little high. I've seen them on the web for half of that.

My point was that after-market bearings bought independently are cheaper than OEM (if still stocked). I think yours is that the same bearing can be bought cheaper on the web that in a local stockist. If you know exactly what you are after, most probably but make sure it is an apples to apples comparison and you are not paying heavily for shipping a small purchase.

I understand. I just think I was in a hurry and went to the most expensive place in the world because I didn't take the time to get out the phone book and call around. I'll bet I could find them cheaper locally, but by the time they told me the price, I just wanted to get out of there and put my engine back together. You know the old saying, "Haste makes an Expensive Engine Rebuild," or something like that.
