Post subject:  My new 79cr250 -no 2nd or 5th gear-HELP ME PLZ!

Hi all, great website and forum. I recently bought a 79 cr250 in excellent shape for 450$. I was told 2nd gear was out when I bought it. The plug was fouled at the time so I couldnt ride it. After puttin a new plug ,new air filter and changing the trans oil , I finally got to hear it and then ride it! I took it out to st. joes park and rode it for the first time. When I went to shift into 2nd gear ,it was like I shifted it into neutral. So I had to shift it up again , which Im assumin was 3rd by the way it felt, then i can shift into 4th but thats it . There is no 5th gear for me to shift up into . I was runnin my 2 buddies at the time, 1 has a 78 cr250 and the other has a 80 cr250. The let down of not havin 5th is undescribable! I will fix this bike and beet their @sses soon! (with a little help) I have no repair manual for this bike yet , and was told that I have a bent fork in my trans. If anyone could please HELP me out , It would be GREATLY appreciated!!
Thanks

You know that a manual will soon be on its way to you. I also have a spare transmission cluster if you need specific parts...

...as an interim step, pop the clutch cover off so you can see the operation of the shift drum. Manually shift gears by playing with the gear lever and spinning the countershaft sprocket. There is a little wheel that engages with the shift drum and as you go up and down the gears you should be able to see quickly which gear you are in (or not) and whether the dogs are engaging.

Thanks alot dude!! I will dig my bike back out of my shed and try this. I do have some mechanical skillz , but don't want to tear into the bike too deep with out having the manual. I'll post back asap when it arrives . Regardless of what the costs , Im determined to get this bike running in all 5 gears!!!!! Any and all advice is highly appreciated!!
