 Post subject: Cr480R hard to start

Anyone out there have any tips for starting a 1983 CR480R? Tried three different brain boxes, two different coils, and two different carbs. Has anyone out there tried a PVL ignition on a CR480 and did it make starting any easier?

Stock Keihin carb with 180 main, 72 pilot, and the clip one from the top. Do Mikuini carbs help it start easier?

Can you bump start the bike? If you can and it runs, I suspect the carb. If it runs and races at idle, may have an air leak. Have you checked the reeds? Chipped reeds hurt starting. And then try a 70 pilot and a 152 main jet. Last resort have a leak down test done.

Check out your enricher circuit in the carb. These are the tiniest pathways, and they are outside of the normal pilot/main loop. If the little pathways are clogged, pulling up the choke (really an enrichener circuit opening valve) won't do anything.
If the bike starts much easier when you spray WD40 into the plug hole or carb throat, AND if the bike starts fine when warm, then I'd follow the path from the choke knob and see if it's plugged.

The other suggestions posted are good too.
