IMS footpegs can be modified to fit.

AMS Racing has wide footpegs for the early and late model CR`s listed on the website. They were under new products. John A.

I am reminded to give John Astleford (jastco) a long-overdue testimonial. I have used his chain guide on my '79 CR250R from the outset. The design is much superior to the stock and after-market ones that use metal plates and rollers. The rubber in your pipe hangers will probably be rotted - he has replacements that are beautiful. He did the IMS pegs to fit my bike too. If you fit an after-market swing arm (DG, Fox etc.) it will pinch the chain against the stock front chain roller. He has a kit to lower the mount and introduce a straighter torque arm. I am going to try that having see pictures of the installation. We had a mix up over replacement fork caps for '82 CR480R forks that some people put on the '79. I had '83 forks. Couple of emails and we got it all cleared up - great service.

Michael,

I have the same pegs that is in your picture on my '79 CR250R. I love the pegs, but because they are so much wider than the stock pegs it decreases the space between the left peg and the shifter. This has resulted in my shifting when I don't want to. Grrrrr....

Do you or anyone know of an after market or OEM shift lever that will fit the '79 CR250R that is longer than the stock shift lever?

I have read here in this forum that a '82 KTM 250 shift lever will fit, and it is longer with a folding tip. I confess I have been lazy in doing this upgrade. Now Murphy has provided me with a alternative approach as a Triumph ripped off my shifter at Day in the Dirt race and left me with a nice stub onto which a modern shifter of choice can be welded....

A fix that has worked for me to cure the wide footpeg problem, is to cut the shift lever and weld in an extension to compensate for the peg width increase, or you can make it any length you like.

I've enclosed a picture of the mod on an IMS shift lever mounted on one of my CRs. I use IMS because they are cheap, readily available and the rubber boot on the shift end gives better grip when the conditions get slimy. Also, the steel lever results in a more positive feel than the stock aluminum IMO. The modification is the shiny area of the otherwise black shift lever. You can also modify your stock lever if you can weld aluminum.

Takes about an hour to complete and is very reliable - never had one fail.

http://www.hammerheaddesignsinc.com/. These work if you have a modern bike or you have a lever that already has a folding tip - like my ex-'83 CR480R.

Excellent suggestion. I have used Hammerhead products for years. Here is a pic of one of their shift lever ends on a
stock CRF shifter. The Pro Circuit pegs are about 6 mm wider than stock in both directions. The Hammerhead extension
is 5 mm longer than stock which effectively solves the jam up between the two. Very easy to install, just grind off the
stock pin and install the extension with the new supplied pin.
