The fork tube diameter on mine is 38 mm with straight tubes, I thought stock was 37mm with the indentations at the top between the triple clamps. My bike was mfg'd 1/1980, it seems odd since I thought the upgrade usually was to 41's from an 81 or 43's from an 83.

You are right about the stock fork diameter. The 78 -80 CRs used the same '430' top triple clamp that fit
a 37mm upper fork tube. The straight (no indention) larger upper fork tube didn't show up until 81.

I don't know why your bike has 38s. The CR450 used the same forks and bridge as the 250 so I don't
know off hand what bike (if any) originally used that size. Maybe you're in posession of a rare set of
"works" forks

I finally figured out what forks I have on this bike after trying to track down a replacement damper rod bolt which was a 12 mm x 1.25 pitch (extra fine metric), and the only forks that had this were Showa 38 mm's from a 1981 CR125. I still don't know where my triple trees came from since the handlebars have a rubber mount usually found on enduro / dual purpose bikes.

Does someone know the fork oil level / height or volume required to fill these forks (81 CR125)?
Many thanks, this forum helps fuel my addiction (6 CR250's and 8 others)
