Saved a couple old honda from the scrap pile and I've got a couple questions. The weren't too bad the seat need recovered and a little sun bleached. I cleaned the carbs and both fired up. Replaced some hoses and cleaned the tanks and they are golden. Both are 1975 one is an XL 250 and the other is a MT 250. What oil do you recommend for the MT transmission and how much? Also the oil tank was missing so I mixed 32:1 and it seems to run fine. The carb needs some tuning still but I'm finally finding the power. The air filter assembly is missing the tube to the carb, the filter, the cover. All I have is the box and the snorkel so I'm going with a uni Sock filter but what is the carb MM? Any help would be much appreciated. I'm looking for the both switches for lights and horn on both sides for the MT. They are there but pretty poor shape. Thanks Oh forgot to ask. The two nipples on either side of the top of the bowl? Is this where the oil tank hooked to the carburator? |

Manual calls for 1.4 quarts of 10W/40 Castrol GTX for the transmission. It will be slightly less since some will stick after you drain it. 32:1 is probably fine for the mix. Original CRs called for ~20:1 but a lot has been learned by the oil manufacturers since then. I typically run in the range of 32:1 to 50:1 depending on the oil I buy and haven't had a problem yet. I *think* the nipples you are talking about are just vents to equalize pressure in the float bowl. On a typical MT that hasn't had a ham fisted mechanic fixing it, one will have a tube going below the area between the swing arm pivot and the frame, the other will just be capped off with a little rubber/plastic hat. The actual oil injection takes place in the manifold. You should have a little threaded hole where a banjo bolt used to go there. Carburetor size or filter? Sheesh! Opening is ~44mm if filter. My manual does not gove carburetor size so maybe someone else will jump in. Relatively tiny, maybe 26-28mm? That is the way Honda kept up their reputation for reliability and their waranty costs down: They put tiny carbs on all their street stuff so you couldn't blow it up. That being said, even my mostly stock MT has enough power to throw me roughly to the ground. My stock MT has plenty of power for running around the neighborhood and can haul my lard butt up the hills in the area. Congrats on the XL too. Rick |

Thanks for all the info. That really helps. My only last issue is spark plugs. I'm going through them like candy. They are shorting out. They are not fouling but literally shorting out. Bike starts great and runs fine and then will just die. Pull the plug and replace it and it starts up again then will die. The plugs will arc from the plug to the case but not in the gap after that. Nice blue spark but nothing in the gap it just shorts straight to the outside of the plug. Any ideas what could be shorting out the plugs? |

I've had this happen a couple of times. With mine it was rusty wet fuel a couple of times. This produced some slight red streaking on the plug. Other times the insulator went from white to gray and was due to piston scuffing Al deposits. Rick |
