Post subject: ignition tuning 76 CR250

I recently had to solder the wire coming down from the back of the coil through the plug in the top of the magneto cover. When I inspected the rest of the wiring at the coil and around the magneto I thought it would be nice to tune up the ignition altogether since its pretty dirty. The cover has a crack in it which I sealed with JB weld. The points look a little rusty and the rest is foreign Japanese to me.

In my Clymer manual there are references to a stator and other things which are not diagramed, but I wouldn't trust the manual anyway. It says that there are parts which should be replaced altogether on the CR.

I know the advantage from tuning the ignition on a car so I would like to do my bike as well. I also know there are tricks which no manual will recomend.

Aside from rebuilding the motor and tranny, and refinishing the frame, everything else has been sandblasted and repainted or rebuilt (exhaust pipe, airbox, bars, carb, throttle). The motor has good compression so I'm going to leave it alone, and the frame is worn but solid and rust free. Everything is original except for the tank (I have one aluminum 75 CR and a steel 76 MR tank).

If anyone has any advice on how to get my bike running better I would be very grateful.
