Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

I am looking for recommendations on a aluminum swing arm for my 1980 CR250. I am having a devil of a time freeing the swing arm bolt and may need to get Mr. Saws All out to cut off the swing arm and save the titled frame. I haven't given up using the penetrating oil, heat and a hydraulic press to get the bolt out. I just dont want to damage the frame in anyway. Is there a particular style or make of aluminum swing arm that is prefered on the 1980 CR in case a drastic measure is needed? Thanks in advance. Mike

i had the same problem, i didnt try heat but i tried every thing else you mentioned in the end i used mr saws all, i would try heat if you dont have a donner swing arm bolt

Based on what I have heard from your reply, I may lose this fight and Mr. Sawsall might be the answer? Is there a good location to cut through the swingarm if it comes to that? I will try some heat this weekend and hopefully it will start to move. I didn't plan on spending a lot of money on the bike, but that will possibly change.

I have seen the Thor replica aluminum swingarms in two different bends on the VMR site. One is straight like the stock swingarm and the other is a banana shape like my 1980 CR125. Anyone have any input on which works better on a CR250?

hi, i took my stripped down frame and layed it on its side and suported it with a long socket i then took my 5 lb hammer to the other side it wouldnt break loose, it just rounded the head of the bolt, so i made two cuts on on each side of the outer part of the swing arm between the spacers. drive a wedege between the spacer washers to give you a little gap when cutting, you can make a new bolt with a rod,i would use a grade 8 rod, after i cut mine i put the swing arm in the vise and drove out the rest of my old bushings, they were ok since yours is frozen to the bolt the inside dia of the bushing is proulbly ok, the out side of bushing is what was spinning, it needs to have a tight fit on the outer dia if it doesnt use center punch and dimple the out side of the bushings, good luck terry
