I'm mulling the purchase of a 1982 CR 250 in good condition, starts easily, runs strong. I wanna race EVO class with it and I'd like some opinions/knowledge about the bike. I've heard the 81's were considered dogs..how does the 82 stand up? Any problems to look for (other than the corrosion of the cooling system)? I like wrenching, but don't wanna spend all week in the garage for an hour of racing on Sunday! Your thoughful expertise would be appreciated. |

I have had one since, well, 1982. I've raced it in AHRMA PV motocross since about 2000. Very solid bike - way better than the 81s. The 82-83 CRs and RMs are the overall most competitive bikes for Post-Vintage or EVO racing. The bike is very fast and has good, stable handling. No bad habits. You just have to set the suspension up for your weight/riding style. The common problem area, as you mention, is the magnesium water pump housing corroding. That's easily fixed or remedied with an aluminum cover off an '81. Keep the suspension in good shape, the steering, linkage and swingarm bearings well-greased, and perform normal MX maintenance and the bike should be largely bullet proof. Honda really hit a home run with the 82 and 83 CRs. |
