Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

Stripping my MT250 I found this one has a different hub to the standard MT250... it does have a cush drive and the MT brake does not fit it, plus the spacer on the brake side is different (its thinner). Since its got a cush drive it has to be a road hub, but it does have anodized alloy rims that look original, still with DID stickers... hmm...

I have a spare rear wheel that looks exactly like yours and it came off a 74 XL250 if that helps?

Amuislngly, I was looking at what i thought was a 74 XL250 (the motorsport model) last week and it had different hub than this one... I reckon people have been playing musical wheels over the years, hmm...

Jon, I just checked out my rear wheels just to verify things and your wheel might not be from a 74 XL250 as I suggested. My XL, MR and MT hubs all have "max. dia. 141.0" cast inside the brake drum and I checked to see if the brake plates are interchangable and they are.
I'm pretty sure it's a Honda hub as it does look identical to my XL250 and very similar to my MT (my MT hub has a chrome DID rim but doesn't have the tin cover plate that the XL hub has). My MR hub is (I think) identical to the 73/74 CR250 - no cush drive, the only difference seems to be that the MR has a lighter (and weaker) rim than the CR.

Hopefully someone else on this forum may be able to help identify exactly what it is.

By the way, I don't know 100% for sure that my XL wheel is from a 74 XL250, but that is what the guy I bought it from said it was....

Sure enough, that's it! I never thought to look into OFF road bikes! I always suspected dirt-only/MX bikes to have solid mount sprockets.

It also seems I am missing the seal so I need to track down one of those then. Strangley my friends 74 XL250's wheel is more like the MT, makes you wonder what has happened to these bikes over the years

The honda xl like the honda mt was a street legal enduro bike hence the cush drive.
