Post subject:  cr 125 plastic repair
i have a 1977 and 1974 cr 125 that I am restoring. The side plates on both bikes have a few cracks and chips. I would really like to save the old plates as opposed to aftermarket. Does anybody have any experience using plastifix? I would certainly be interested in other ideas. What type of plastic are these plates made from?....Steve

Ive used plastifix and also the normal plumbers plastic pipe glue, both worked on the MT250 and SL125 panels I had with the plumbers glue being probably the best as it melted the panel better, but the plastifix was less work perhaps... Ive yet to perfect the plastifix perhaps but so far ive been less impressed than I wanted to be... maybe im using the wrong panels and the plastic isnt right for plastifix... one example was repairing the loop on a run/stop switch for the MT. it fell apart the second I put any stress on it, not what the makers said in their blurb... :(

as i know they use Polyethylene (PE) for fenders and sidepanels at the CR models.

To fix my 75 CR125 side cover cracks I went to a guy was skilled in plastic welding. He tried several types of filler rod and determined that the side covers are made of ABS plastic. He welded up the cracks from the back side and then I sanded them down flush. They are now as strong as new. The filler rod was a black color but since it was on the back side it is not visible when installed.
