Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

With no real luck finding any OEM intake manifolds for the early CR cyls, I discovered that for the price of the aftermarket versions that Mossbarger did a reed valve kit... but i cant get hold of them to find out more as the email addy is dead and i cant phone the USA from here. So anyone used these or have an idea on how to contact them via email?

I had one and once the jetting was right it was fine you do have to make your own airbox though as it put's the carb a lot further back

Thanks for the heads up. Looks like with the CR engine in the MT frame I am going to have to lose the airbox and run a pod filter or something i fab myself anyway, but getting too close to the rear wheel might be an issue.

Jon, if you plan on putting the Mossbarger on your MT/CR hybrid, you will need to do quite extensive frame mods as the spine/hoop under the MT's seat, goes down much further than the CR's and you will struggle to fit a carb. It is quite a big job that I am underway with on my MT/CR hybrid. It has meant major frame surgery but I'm nearly there now.
I will be using a Twin Air filter that has a rubber boot bonded to it and fabricating an air box to go around it.

I have tried to get in touch with Mossbarger and like you, no replies.

I recently bought another CR250M Mossbarger reed assembly for a project that I'm not sure I'll have the time to do so if you are intent on going down this route, I may possibly have one for sale - complete with Mossbarger's additional piston and barrel modification instruction sheet for maximum performance.

Another option is to buy a YZ250A reed valve and carb inlet manifold and then machine / fabricate a manifold to bolt the reed valve to the cylinder.
I believe this is the mod Don Jones did to Gary's championship winning CR250...

Wish I had that knowledge before going down the route of modifying my frame.

Grae, thank you so much for the info! I think you may have just saved me from a whole lot of hard work... but i may well revisit this idea on my other bike... feel free to PM me if you want to sell your spare kit, I may be interested... im a glutton for punishment perhaps!

Im also interested to hear about the YZ conversion, sounds like that might bring the carb lower and may save some headaches... all good ideas...
