Im new to this forum and motorcycle restorations really. Ive restored plenty of cars. Anyway, I just bought a 78 cr250r and I need the complete trans.

I have found some on ebay but I don't want to spend $250. Are there any other years I can use, or just 78-80?

I will post pics of the restoration as I go as well.

Have you checked to see what those gears go for from Honda - at least the ones that
are still available? $250 for a complete tranny is a decent price and I doubt you'll find
anything worth having for much less.

Just a heads up since you're new to motorcycle restorations, depending on how complete
your "basket" is, and what level of restoration you are going for, this project won't be cheap.
I doubt anyone was able to finish one for less than $3000, and many of us spent way more
than that.

I haven't checked with Honda. One of the shafts and all the gears that go with it are missing. The other shaft is broke, one piece is in the clutch and three of the gears on that shaft were broke.

I totally understand what it takes to restore a bike and I know first hand how it can add up pretty quick, it adds up with a car just the same. I anticipated the restoration to be around $2500.

Other that the tranny, the bike is pretty well complete except for the air box is busted.

I've seen complete engines go for $250. Most of the roached engines I've bought still had good transmissions. But you are taking a chance. I have a spare crank case, cylinder, crankshaft and transmission for my MR. Bought them slowly over the years. I keep thinking I'll buy a head, bearings, new piston and assemble a turnkey drop-in second engine, but never seem to get around to it.
