Is the engine number supposed to match the frame? I have one that appears to have had the case replaced with a new one, there is no number and it appears that it was never there, no grind marks and the original engine paint is on it. Thanks Jeff |

I dont know for sure about th cr but I know the honda xl's of that era did not have matching frame/engine numbers so I really doubt the cr did. The case sounds like a replacement as they didnt have numbers on them. |

From my limited experience with early CR's, engine numbers are generally within 50-100 numbers of the frame number. Engine cases with no numbers means the case was a replacement from Honda. In other words, someone purchased the case from Honda parts, back in the day when they were still stocked items. |
