My Clymer manual shows the capacity to be somewhere between .90 quarts and 1.5 quarts. Does anyone know the exact amount? My dipstick is broken off my fill plug so I'm not sure how far below the surface I should fill the gearbox.
;) My manual also shows I should use 30 to 40 wt gear oil but the local shop wants to sell me 80 to 90 wt. Which is correct?

The capacity is 500 cc if you are draining and re-filling, 750 cc if the motor is "dry" after a rebuild. There is a hex-head bolt in front of the countershaft sprocket to check the oil height. If oil dribbles out you are OK. I assume that you measure this when the engine is warmed up. Use motorcycle-specific gear oil at 80 weight. Engine and motor oil have different rating systems hence the difference in the two numbers.
