am in the middle of replacing all the OEM "cheesehead" screws with allen-head socket screws on my project bike and found an error i made last fall when replacing the points. easy to do i guess 'cause there's little room in there, and the points wire is really short. access is much nicer when the bike is on my bench, and i can actually see what i'm doing.
when reinstalling the stator just now i noticed the points wire insulation was slightly scuffed, and quickly found it had rubbed on the flywheel cam last fall when i ran the ol' girl for a few minutes. i had neglected to carefully place the points wire in the little slot, under the points plate. the wire(s) need to be in the slot to secure them away from the spinning flywheel cam. no harm done, and i taped the area w/scotch 33 just for good measure. the increased diameter holds it in the slot a little better too.
at some point i would have lost spark or had erratic running, and then had a problem finding the cause.
something to watch for. here's a pic showing the points wires and slot i'm taking about.
