I have seen that someone had a problem with the low end of a 1976 Elsinore(no top speed).I cant seem to find his comment, that`s why I am answering this way.I had the same problem. This is the conclusion that I came to that helped me:
1. it depends what time of year it is,the altitude and the humidity in the air.I found it ran best in dry air(like most machines)
2. I could have changed the carburator or the needle point setting (or bigger sprocket)but I found out through trial and error I replaced all my rubber gaskets with teflon gaskets.I could have done other modifications, which I have done with my other motorcross machines, but my Elsinore means a lot to me,that`s my baby.I want to keep it as original as possible,it has less than 2000 hours riding time.It still has the knobbies on the original tires and no wear marks from the heel.Eventually what I ended up doing with the teflon seals in place,I mixed it 20:1 with 3% alcohol industrial grade.I never raced my machine, but I can say, since I have done this I cannot keep the bike to the ground.Be it good or be it bad,I love my Elsinore and I have many other bikes, but that`s my favourite toy.
