Hi everyone, I have a '74 MT250 that I am fixing up. The rear brake lever has the stop broken off. This allows it to swing up too far when it is not depressed. I can't seem to find where the stop is supposed to be rewelded. Can someone take a pic of their brake peddle and right foot peg for me please? I guess this is the same on other models. This would be a big help. Thanks Newfie |

Not a good scan and bit map so it take forever to load. I tried to touch it up a bit and made it look worse. The bracket has a nut welded to it on the opposite side of the brake. The bolt that screws into it has a nut on it to lock it down. The head makes contact with a flange on the brake pedal. http://home.earthlink.net/~ricortes/mt250brake.JPG |

I just went out and snapped a couple of shots of this area on my bike. This is definitely the weakest area on my frame. It had pretty much collapsed a long time ago, durring my youth. (I beat the poor thing to death) A year ago last spring when I had my motor off to rebuild the upper and lower end, I painted the frame. Before painting I straighten out the stop and repaired the welds with my mig welder. Also replaced the nut and bolt. Unfortunately the bracket is already a little tweaked since I repaired it. It would be nice to fabricate a new one out of heavier material. Some of the aftermarket units that I have seen for the 73 CR-250 appear to have a rubber damper on the top side that may rest on the casing. I wonder if they would fit on our bikes? They aren't cheap. Follow the www link at the bottom of my post. Not much there but I dropped 2 pictures in that show that area. Some cold winter day I'll post some of the pictures I took while have the case apart. Ricotes - Is the stop on yours still in place? |

I have two MTs, a '74 & '75 and both are intact. I am in process of restoring the '75 and took a look at it before I responded. The only thing wrong with the '75 is the brake pedal is so bent it doesn't contact the the stop bolt properly. It probably isn't the best design choice. Figure you hit anything like a rock or log with the brake level or lay it down on the right side it's going to drive the lever up into the case and snap or bend that stop. I've got pretty good gouges on both my MTs cases from that. |

Nice pics Jake. Looks like your guys are having a blast. I think I know what I have to do to fix this up. I will try to fab something a bit more sturdy than the original. Another problem I have is that both my foot pegs are bend down. They are bent just enough that it feels like my feet are going to slip off at any moment. Does anyone have a fix for this? Jake I noticed you have rubber pegs... Newfie |

If your feet feel like they’re sliding off they are probably more worn than bent. My right one was bent upwards. Like Ricortes says a few falls will bend the brake lever and stop but a good fall will also tweak the peg. The right side mount unbolts from the frame. I heated it cherry red and bent it straight in a vise. My pegs are original although I have replaced the Rubber. Most of the others seem to have metal pegs. I thought the 74 was rubber and later was metal but have nothing to base this on. I also found a swingarm on Ebay from a 75 that had rear peg on it. My original had no rear pegs. Now I can take my son for a ride. If the original pegs are worn and drooping maybe you could build the area up with a bead of weld or find some replacements. My friends ride a DRZ400 and a DR650. They can blow me away if they want but on the single track I'm usually not too far behind. |

The right side peg is bolted on. Usually the mount (peg mount that is bolted on) bends down. This can be bent up in place a couple times but is going to break off completely some day. Also, replace the bolt with a grade 5 or grade 8 first. These are known to loosen over time too. I welded my CR's peg to the frame... to stop this but then the frame broke. 
As mentioned earlier, you may just want to build the contact area some with a welder. |
