Post subject:  Installing tapered Steering head bearings? 1977 CR125M

Hi,
Ok i got a set of tapered Steering head bearings for my 77 Cr125m, but
there's not instructions?

Which way do the bearings go in? Taper face up or down? ,
also is the lower original bearing ball retainer press on to the stem?

Do I need to press out the whole stem to get it (retainer) off?

I am guessing the kit should end up just like the later CRs that have tapered bearings stock. The upper bearing race goes in with the narrower opening down into the frame. Check that you don't need a grease retainer to go in first. When in, this leaves you with a angled surface which holds the upper bearing. This just sits on the race and is held in place by the nut on the steerer. The bottom race is the opposite. The narrower end goes up into the frame. The bearing goes narrower side up down over the steerer. Between it and the lower triple clamp you may have a flat washer which is a grease retainer. You should not need to remove the steerer to get the old one off or the new one on.
