Rode the bike 100 yds down the street.. it died on me.. couldn't get it started. Took it back to the house and noticed this on the outside cover:

I knew it couldn't be good, so I pulled the oil dipstick and it was GONE!

realizing something had spun loose, I opened the case again (also to address the slipping kick start again) to find THIS:

and this:

boy was that exciting. The bolt is fine, and all the gears are in tact. I will have to replace the magnesium case at some point. (unless JB weld will be ok for the time being)

I have ordered a manual for the bike, but does anyone have the torque specs for that gear's bolt?? I couldn't believe it spun out. I am glad the bike died, though, instead of eating gears off.

Also, is the the culprit of the slipping kickstart?

it appears to have broken a corner off:

Can't speak on the splipping starter. I've put mine together a couple of times, but am not an expert. I worry more about gears and things inside your case from lack of oil. I didn't torque mine, just used 3/8" ratchet and got it tight. As far as case goes, JB weld will hold it for quite a while, but unless you alleviate the stress that caused it, you will have problems. Here is one from a MR on the bay that should work:

Oops. That cover on the Bay I think is actually from a MT, not an MR , but it would fit an CR for 75-76. But part numbers for 73-74 are different, so keep looking, they are out there.

CHUD,

Our host Nathan has the manual online here. Problem is the link doesn't always show up once you start browsing these forums. If you go back to the home page at http://www.honda-elsinore.com/ and look up towards the top you'll see a hyperlink titled "MANUALS". Go there.

Ya that is the problem with a slipping kickstart. the grooves in that kickstart gear also wear flat. and the spring clip streches and looses its hold.

excellent, thanks for the tips. I actually spoke with our brethren Don at elsinores dot com and ordered a new spindle and pawl. I have to say, you meet the nicest people on two wheels and Don and the Vintage Dirt Bike forums are no different. Thanks to all that have replied to my posts.

If any are interested, here is my other vintage project, a 1980 Suzuki GS750T. I belong to another vintage STREETBIKE forum called gsresources.com. Another great bunch of folks..
